If you’re looking to whip up some sandwiches, an air fryer is your best friend. Let me introduce you to a traditional and beloved American classic: the grilled cheese sandwich. This recipe is incredibly delicious and surprisingly simple.
The melted cheese in this sandwich stretches delightfully, making each bite a divine experience. It’s easy to see why the dish is aptly named “grilled cheese.”
For this scrumptious grilled cheese, all you need is toast bread, cheese, and butter. One unique twist is that you should spread room temperature butter on every side of the bread. This little trick ensures your grilled cheese turns out golden and extra tasty.
What Type of Cheese Should You Use?
I find that using pre-sliced cheese makes assembling this sandwich a breeze. The recipe here uses three slices of cheese per sandwich, a perfect balance for achieving that irresistible melt.
Feel free to use any cheese that melts well. While Swiss or American can be a popular choice, don’t hesitate to experiment with others like Emmental or Gruyère. These cheeses offer a richer flavor, which complements the mild tastes of the bread and butter wonderfully.
For the sandwiches in the photos, I used two slices of Emmental and one slice of mature cheddar for a truly excellent flavor profile.
Cooking Time and Temperature
Cook your sandwiches at 320 degrees Fahrenheit (160 Celsius) for about 9 minutes.
Many high-end air fryers, like the Cosori Premium or Smart models, have a sandwich setting that also works great for this recipe, running at 320 degrees for 8-9 minutes.
