What Is a Savory French Toast Anyways?
Savory French toast, “bundáskenyér”, is a popular Hungarian dish that is simple to make yet filling and delicious, perfect for breakfast or dinner. To prepare it, stale bread is sliced and then dipped in beaten eggs seasoned with salt. The egg-coated bread slices are then fried in hot oil until they are golden brown on both sides. The result is a crispy, golden brown exterior with a soft and flavorful interior, often served with fresh vegetables or pickles.
The variations of savory French toast are almost endless. Some people enrich the egg mixture with milk or cream to make the final product even softer. Others add cheese, ham, or fresh herbs before frying to enhance the flavor. This dish is not only popular in Hungary but also known and enjoyed in other countries, especially in Central Europe, under different names and variations. Its simplicity and versatility make it an ideal choice for a hearty and quick meal.
